| The Central Illinois Cougars became a franchise member of
the Midwest Football League (MFL) on February 13, 1999. At the time, Owner
Kinney Myles, who played for the Tampa Bay Bandits in the USFL set out to
create an organization based on the professional attributes seen in the
NFL. On a much smaller scale, the Cougars have established
themselves as such a team. Surviving their first year without a home
field and a record of 1-8. The Cougars came together to finish the 2000
season with an 8-1 record and winning the Southern Conference.
Additionally the Cougars gained national recognition by being ranked 29th
in the nation out of 167 AA teams. The remarkable turnaround wasn't a
fluke, the style of play that the Cougars played, a coaching staff that
demanded players to be professional on and off of the field, intense
recruiting, and most of all, a team concept propelled the team into a
winning season. In the 2001 season approximately 22 new players were added
to the team making the Cougars deeper in every position. After the 2000 season, numerous players were asked to several pro combines with our two-year all-pro QB Corey Duffling being looked at by a European professional team. Our desire is to bring quality football to the area, which will allow affordable entertainment for the entire family. With the problems families have to face in today's society, Saturday nights spent together as a family can only strengthen family bonds and create life long memories. |
